In October 2014 Maps n Trax was acquired by RallyTo from NIXANZ, its original developer. RallyTo has never owned nor provided support for Bit Map, the predecessor app to Maps n Trax. This section explains the history of Maps n Trax and Bit Map, and provides instructions for Bit Map users to convert to Maps n Trax.
Before Maps n Trax There Was Bit Map
Maps n Trax was designed by NIXANZ as an upgrade for Bit Map. While both apps provided customers with the capability to convert and view digital maps, Bit Map had several limitations and problems inherent in its design that required a completely new product. NIXANZ managed a year-long migration program to move Bit Map customers to Maps n Trax from November 2012 into November 2013. Bit Map was deleted permanently from the App Store by NIXANZ on 19 November 2013 and ceased customer support for it in June 2014.
Getting Started With Maps n Trax
Maps n Trax incorporates and expands upon the capabilities of its predecessor. Bit Map customers interested in migrating to Maps n Trax should download it from the iOS App Store.
Important Note Regarding Accuracy and Calibration of Migrated Maps
Maps n Trax uses a different projection than Bit Map. This means that maps exported from Bit Map then imported into Maps n Trax will usually have less accurate calibration, resulting in location inaccuracies on the imported maps (and the imported maps will not line up precisely with the background online maps).
Therefore, we strongly recommended that customers migrating from Bit Map to Maps n Trax go back to the original source of their map images and prepare them for Maps n Trax according to the instructions in the section, Preparing Maps for Import – Warping, Calibrating and Tiling. This will be more time consuming than exporting files from Bit Map but will result in more accurate map calibration and location displays.
Exporting Maps and Tracks (Routes) from Bit Map
Maps n Trax can import the tracks and maps exported from Bit Map. The methods described below are the quickest and easiest way to migrate maps and tracks from Bit Map to Maps n Trax. However they will not necessarily result in accurate map calibration or accurate locations placements (see Important Note above).
Export Tracks (Routes) from Bit Map
Note that in Bit Map, Tracks are called ‘Routes’.
- From Bit Map’s Map View, tap the ‘•••’ (more) item at the right end of the bottom toolbar.
- Tap the ‘Routes’ item in the tab bar.
- Tap the ‘Send All’ button in the top toolbar. An email composer view will appear with all the Tracks (Routes) included as attachments.
- Enter the email address to send to. The email address should be one that you can receive emails from.
- Tap ‘Send’ to send the email and attached Tracks (Routes).
- After receiving the email, save the attachments somewhere safe ready for importing into Maps n Trax.
Note that the emailed tracks (routes) will be in KML format. This format does not store complete information for each waypoint, but it should be enough for most purposes.
Export Maps from Bit Map
- From Bit Map’s Map View, tap the ‘•••’ (more) item at the right end of the bottom toolbar.
- Tap the ‘Maps’ item in the tab bar.
- Tap the ‘Export All’ button in the bottom toolbar. The maps will be exported into a directory structure in the Documents store for Bit Map on the device. The top-level folder will be called ‘Bit Map – Exported Maps’.
- Connect the device to a computer running iTunes and in iTunes click on the device in the left sidebar, then on ‘Apps’ in the top tab bar of iTunes.
- Still in iTunes, scroll down to the bottom to the ‘File Sharing’ section of the ‘Apps’ tab and click on ‘Bit Map’ in the ‘Apps’ list of the ‘File Sharing’ area.
- Drag the ‘Bit Map – Exported Maps’ folder from the ‘Bit Map Documents’ list to the computer’s Desktop (or to where ever you want to save it) ready for importing to Maps n Trax later.
Once this folder is stored somewhere safe, you should delete it from the device using the same part of iTunes as they can take up a lot of storage space on the device.
