Terminology and Hierarchy of Map and Track Objects

In Maps n Trax a ‘Map’ can include multiple ‘Sheets’ (or images) and maps can be grouped into ‘Atlases’.  Similarly, a ‘Track’ can include multiple ‘Waypoints’ (locations) and tracks can be grouped into ‘Directories’.  The tables below include further details on the implications of this.  Individual objects can easily be moved out of their parent item and into another parent item of the same type at any time.

Sheets, Maps and Atlases

Object Type Description Notes

Atlas

An arbitrary collection of maps.  Can contain zero, one or multiple maps. Which maps are included in an Atlas is arbitrary and entirely up to the user.  An atlas is merely a means for the user to group maps manually according to whatever criteria the user wants to use.

Map

A collection of sheets which should not be arbitrary.  Can contain zero, one or multiple sheets.Must be included in one and only one atlas. Although a map can contain an arbitrary collection of sheets, it should be used to contain only sheets that are of the same scale (or zoom level).  Maps n Trax will assume that all sheets are of the same zoom/scale and attributes the zoom scale of one arbitrary sheet to the map as a whole. The map zoom scales are used to determine the order of layering of maps in the Map View, as well as determining which map is next in sequence when zooming in/out using the +/- toolbar items in the Map View.

Sheet

An individual image or graphic.Must be included in one and only one map. Sheets may be internally split into image tiles for storage and display purposes, but these tiles are not readily available to the user for management purposes.Sheets may include several versions of the image for several zoom scales.  These different zoom scale images are not available to the user for management purposes. The finest zoom scale included in a sheet is considered to be the sheet’s ‘best zoom scale’ and sheets with significantly different best zoom scales should not be mixed in a single map.  The zoom scale of a map will be determined by the best zoom scale of an arbitrary one of its included sheets.

Waypoints, Tracks and Directories

Object Type Description Notes

Directory

An arbitrary collection of tracks.  Can contain zero, one or multiple tracks. Which tracks are included in a Directory is arbitrary and entirely up to the user.  A directory is merely a means for the user to group tracks manually according to whatever criteria the user wants to use.

Track

An arbitrary collection of waypoints.  Can contain zero, one or multiple waypoints.Must be included in one and only one directory. Tracks usually include an ordered series of waypoints, but can be used to store any arbitrary and unordered set of waypoints.

Waypoint

An individual record of a location at a point in time.Must be included in one and only one track. A waypoint includes a coordinate, altitude and timestamp.

Track Segments

Within a Track, the waypoints are further grouped into ‘Segments’.  In most cases a Track consists of just one single Segment which contains all of the Track’s Waypoints.  However, when using automatic recording a new segment will be created if recording is stopped and then started again.  When calculating the length and time of a track, the combined total of all the Track’s Segments are summed.  The times and distances between the last point of a segment and the first point of the next segment are not included.

Note that if the waypoints within a track are re-sorted or manually re-arranged, all of the Track’s segments will be merged into one single segment.

Maps n Trax does not provide any further interface to manage Segments.
